No. With Ooma Smart Security, there are no contracts or long-term commitments. Customers can cancel their monthly subscription at any time.

How do Ooma Smart Security devices connect to the Telo Base Station? Is the connection secure?

Ooma Smart Security devices connect with your Telo Base Station through DECT Ultra Low Energy (ULE) technology. This method connection is much less power hungry than a traditional Wi-Fi connection, giving our hardware accessories an estimated battery life of up to two years. It is also extremely secure since the connection does not have an IP address that can be accessed outside of your home network.

Will Ooma Smart Security still work if my power goes out?

If your power goes out, you will receive a notification through the Ooma Smart Security app. If you have one or more Ooma Smoke Alarms, they will still emit a loud alarm in the event of a fire. Your hardware devices will not be able to send you additional notifications until the power comes back.

What is the connection range for Ooma Smart Security?

Smart Security equipment should be installed within a range of approximately 200 feet from the Telo Base Station to ensure optimal performance. Please note that certain factors such as the type of home, construction material, number of walls, and others can impact the sensor range.

What is the projected battery life for Ooma Smart Security sensors?

The projected battery life of Ooma Smart Security sensors varies by sensor. Battery life is impacted by usage, so sensors that are used less frequently may have a longer battery life than sensors that are placed in heavily-traveled areas. An Ooma Smoke Alarm battery will last up to ten years. Most Smart Security sensors have a battery life of approximately 1.5 years with average use.

Depending on the tier of service they are subscribed to, Ooma customers who are using the most updated generation of hardware, can link unlimited Smart Security sensors to the Telo Base Station.

Ooma customers who are using the previous generation of Telo Base Station can link up to three Smart Security sensors.

What types of notifications can Ooma Smart Security generate?

Ooma Smart Security can generate the following types of notifications:

  • Push notifications: Push notifications will pop up on your mobile phone.
  • Base announcements: Your Telo Base Station will announce each notification through its speaker.
  • Phone call [Secure Plan]: You will receive a phone call for each notification. This notification type gives you the option to be connected to 911 as though you are calling emergency services from your home address in the US or Canada.
  • Email [Secure Plan]: You will receive an email for each notification.
  • SMS [Secure Plan]: You will receive a text message for each notification.
  • Siren [Secure Plan, Requires Ooma Siren]: After a brief grace period, your Ooma Siren will sound an alarm when the sensors you specify are triggered.
  • Professional Monitoring [Pro Secure Plan]: In a situation where you are not able to receive alerts, a trained operator can dispatch local authorities on your behalf.

Can I use Ooma Smart Security to dial 911?

The Ooma Smart Security app allows Secure Plan and Pro Secure Plan customers to dial 911 as if they were calling from their home phone and using their home address. This means that you can reach your home’s local emergency services from anywhere in the US or Canada, and that the 911 dispatcher will automatically receive your home address and phone number when the call connects. This information will allow the operator to dispatch emergency services to your home as quickly as possible.

The location of the button you will use to dial 911 depends on the hardware you have synced with Ooma Smart Security:

  • If you have one or more Ooma Sirens installed: The 911 button can be found in the app’s Action Center, which can be accessed from any screen by pressing action center.
  • If you do not have an Ooma Siren: You can reach 911 by pressing 911 from any screen in the app.

When you push the 911 button in the app, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to dial emergency services from your home address, along with which phone you are using (e.g. cell phone, work phone, etc.). You will then see a prompt telling you that you will receive a call to the phone you have selected shortly. When you pick up the call, you will need to press “1” to confirm that you wish to dial 911.

How can I change my e911 address?

The e911 address that you have on file will determine where emergency personnel will be directed when 911 is dialed for any reason from your Ooma phone or through the Ooma Smart Security app. You can learn more about e911, including how to update your address, by visiting our 911 FAQ.

Is my Ooma Smart Security setup monitored by a person?

Pro Secure Plan customers can set up professional monitoring with trained professionals who can contact emergency services on their behalf. All sensors can be monitored, although police and fire personnel will not be dispatched if your water sensor triggers an alarm.
