Responding to an emergency with the Ooma Smart Security app
Responding to an emergency with the Ooma Smart Security app is the fastest way to get help to your home. Seconds matter in the event of an emergency, so it’s important that you have a decisive course of action available to you.
The Ooma Smart Security app lets users issue a distress signal to a professional monitoring team (Pro Secure Plan) or call 911 with the touch of a button (Secure and Pro Secure Plans). If you have an Ooma Siren installed, you can choose to sound a loud alarm instead of or in addition to a call to 911. No matter where you are in the world, your call will be routed to emergency responders using your home address.

How does 911 work with Ooma Smart Security?
When you register your Ooma Smart Security account, you must provide a valid address within the country of purchase (either the U.S. or Canada). This address is filed as your service address, and is the address that will be used for 911 calls made by customers who also subscribe to Ooma home telephone service.
If you use Ooma Smart Security to make a call to dial 911, your service address is forwarded to emergency response personnel so that they can locate you. It is very important to keep your service address up to date so that emergency personnel can be dispatched to the right location in the event of an emergency.
How do I call 911 when there’s an emergency?
The 911 button allows customers with the Secure Plan service tier to dial 911 as if they were calling from their home phone and using their home address. This means that you can reach your home’s local emergency services from anywhere in the US or Canada, and that the 911 dispatcher will automatically receive your home address when the call connects.
The 911 button may be located in one of two places depending on your Ooma Smart Security hardware configuration:
-
If you have one or more Ooma Sirens installed: The 911 button can be found in the app’s Action Center, which can be accessed from any screen in the app by pressing .
-
If you do not have an Ooma Siren: You can reach 911 by pressing from any screen in the app.
When you push the 911 button, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to dial emergency services from your home address, along with which phone you are using (e.g. cell phone, work phone, etc.). You will then see a prompt telling you that you will receive a call to the phone you have selected shortly. When you pick up the call, you will need to press “1” to confirm that you wish to dial 911.
What is the Action Center?
The Action Center is a timeline of events that have been triggered on your Ooma Smart Security system. You can scroll through the events to review your account’s history, or to cancel false alarms. If you would like to know more about any event, click it for details.
In the event of an emergency, you can use the Action Center to send a distress signal to the professional monitoring team (Pro Secure Plan), to call 911 (Pro Secure and Secure Plan), to sound a loud alarm through the Siren, or all of the above.
If the power is out, can I still dial 911?
Your Ooma Smart Security system will not be able to send event notifications in the event of a power outage. If an emergency occurs while the power is out, however, you can still dial 911 using the Ooma Smart Security app on your mobile device.
What do I need to do if I move or change addresses?
If you move or change addresses, you will need to update your service address. You can accomplish that by doing the following:
- Log into your My Ooma account
- Navigate to Service Address under Account
- Fill out your home address in its entirety
- Save your changes
